In a significant operation, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 13 individuals suspected of illegal mining activities in the Asokoro area of Abuja.
The arrests took place on Wednesday following a tip-off that led to the interception of the suspects.
According to the EFCC, the suspects were allegedly involved in the illegal transportation of large quantities of coal and kaolin.
The minerals were being transported in five trucks from Nassarawa State to a site in Kaduna State.
The operation was based on credible intelligence linking the suspects to these illicit activities.
“The EFCC received reliable information regarding the illegal transportation of minerals. Acting on this intelligence, our operatives moved swiftly to intercept the suspects in Asokoro,” an EFCC official said.
The official added that the suspects were currently undergoing interrogation to uncover further details about their operations and affiliations.
“The EFCC is committed to a thorough investigation to ensure that all individuals involved in this illegal mining network are brought to justice.
“Illegal mining has been a persistent issue in Nigeria, contributing to environmental degradation and loss of revenue for the government,” the official said.
The EFCC’s efforts are part of a broader strategy to clamp down on these activities and uphold the rule of law in the mining sector.
Upon the conclusion of the investigation, the EFCC plans to charge the suspects in court. The Commission reiterated its dedication to curbing economic crimes and urged the public to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
This operation underscores the EFCC’s resolve to tackle illegal mining and other forms of economic sabotage, which have far-reaching implications for the nation’s economy and environment. The EFCC continues to work tirelessly to ensure that Nigeria’s natural resources are protected and managed in accordance with the law.
